Quinoa… Keen Wah What?

 

Quinoa, pronouned “keen wah” is 100% whole grain.  It can be substituted for almost any other grain, although technically, it’s a seed of a plant related to spinach.  It packs a punch in nutrition and is close to being a perfect food.

Quinoa is “one of the best sources of protein

in the vegetable kingdom” according to

The National Academy of Sciences.

The United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization

states that quinoa is a source of all essential amino acids.

 

Other Great Benefits of Quinoa: 

  • It contains lysine–the amino acid which helps the body produce protein as well as process the protein in the quinoa and in other foods.
  • It helps keep bones strong and healthy with very high amounts of manganese.
  • Quinoa is low glycemic and helps to maintain normal blood sugar levels.
  • It’s a great source of B vitamins containing niacin, thiamin and B6.
  • It contains high levels of potassium and riboflavin. 
  • Quinoa is also good source of magnesium, zinc, copper, folic acid and vitamin E.
  • It doesn’t give you that heavy feeling in your tummy and has a nutty flavor.
