Olive oil is one of nature’s most perfect foods with many nutritional benefits.   Olives are harvested from some of the most beautiful areas of the Mediterranean in the fall and the olive oil is available in many grades.

Olives contain many vitamins and antioxidants. Olive oil is well known for its health benefits and has a long list of polyphenols that occur naturally in plants.   These polyphenols are antioxidant and anti-inflammatory to the body.  Extra virgin olive oil has the highest concentration of the healing polyphenols and are easily digested.

 

Hydroxytyrosol is an extremely rare polyphenol found in olive oil.  It is believed to be one of the most powerful antioxidants, coming in second to gallic acid.  Research has shown it to be ten times greater than green tea and two time greater than CoQ10 in providing an all-natural approach to free-radical damage.  It is highly potent and very beneficial in slowing down the aging process.  The synergy effect with other olive phenols is important as research continues.

 

Anti-inflammatory properties are rarely found in a fat. Olive oil is made up of fat calories, but the fat is monounsaturated, which is considered a healthy fat. Many other types of fat can cause the body to increase production of molecules which trigger inflammatory responses. Olive oil has been shown to considerably decrease the production of these molecules when consumed on a regular basis. For the average person, this means that changing from butter to olive oil within their diet can aid in lowering joint swelling and pain from diseases like arthritis.

Extra virgin olive oil is also praised for its ability to protect the body from certain forms of cancer. Studies have confirmed that diets similar to the Mediterranean style of dieting can help to protect the body from colon cancer and other diseases of the bowels. This is attributed to the large quantities of polyphenols in olive oil, especially the purest forms of the oil. Olive oil is helpful in protecting the body’s very structure or DNA from oxidative stress. Calcium is also more readily absorbed by the human body when olive oil is present in the diet. This absorption helps to create stronger bones and teeth.

 

Olive oil and its relationship in curing cancer is worthy of exploration. Studies of breast cancer patients have recently shown a decrease in the replication of breast cancer cells when olive oil is present in the diet. This study shows similar results with other forms of cancer. From a scientific view, these results could be a breakthrough in the treatment of cancer patients. If changes in diet can help to reverse the effects of cancer, then these same changes should change many other diseases, as well.

 

Longer lives and healthier brains are thought to come from olive oil. People who consume olive oil on a daily basis tend to have better cognitive retention as they age.  The antioxidants which are so numerous in the oil protect the brain over the course of a lifetime. Many researchers are looking toward the Mediterranean diet to help explain this cognitive longevity.

 

Olive oil certainly seems to be a miracle food. It has been a part of human culture and consumption for thousands of years. Olive oil’s healthy properties are only just being explored through scientific studies and the future looks bright for this delicious oil.

Gluten is a protein that is found in many wheat products and flours, as well as rye and barley.  It is a sticky substance which binds your food together.  Some experts believe as many as 1 in 20 Americans may have some form of gluten-intolerance.

 

If you have a wheat allergy and consume these products, gluten upsets your intestines and causes your immune system to respond.  This response causes symptoms such as abdominal discomfort, gas and bloating and could cause other symptoms as shown below.  These symptom can appear even in people who don’t have celiac disease.

 

What is Celiac Disease?

Celiac Disease is a digestive disease that causes permanent damage to the small intestine. This interferes with absorbing certain nutrients, such as iron, calcium and vitamin D, which can create gastrointestinal problems as well as osteoporosis and anemia.  People who have celiac disease cannot tolerate gluten.

 

Symptoms of Gluten-Intolerance:

People who have problems processing gluten can suffer from bloating, headaches, heart burn and stomach cramps just to name a few.  The chart below shows many symptoms of gluten-intolerance.

The other choice (which I highly recommend) is to start eliminating gluten from your life.  I say “life” because gluten seems to be everywhere these days.  It’s in millions of products!  It’s critical to start reading labels for everything you ingest or put on your skin.  Although gluten is mainly in foods, it may also be found in products that you use every day. I’ve even seen gluten in a vitamins!

Why Is Slightly Alkaline Blood Important?

You have optimum health when you have slightly alkaline blood. Your pH is a scale that measures how acidic or alkaline the blood is and how much oxygen your blood can absorb.  The pH scale ranges from 1 to 14 with the low side being acidic and the higher numbers being alkaline.

Alkalize or Die

 

If your blood pH is too low or too high on the scale, it would change the electrical chemistry, and that can lead to serious help issues or death.  Maintaining slightly alkaline blood is critical to your health!

The blood stream is one of the most important systems in the body that depends on this delicate process.


Oxygen is transported in the blood to all body tissues by red blood cells that move single file through tiny capillaries.


The outside of healthy red blood cells have a negative charge that allows them to be separated or resist each other.  Acidity in the blood interferes with this process by stripping away the negative charge …that can lead to the clumping together of the red blood cells… and making it more difficult, if not impossible, for them to pass through the bloodstream, especially through the small capillaries.


Your cells are then deprived of oxygen, the acid weakens the red blood cells, then they begin to die and start releasing more acid into your body!  You need stomach acid to properly digest your food, but all other acidity in the body can be serious to your health.  Energy levels can drop significantly and red blood cells are challenged to deliver oxygen and nutrients easily to the cells.


Dis-ease sets in when your body is acidic (acidosis) heart problems, candida overgrowth as well as a multitude of other health challenges.  This is why it is so important to have slightly alkaline blood.  If the pH is out of balance to the extreme either way, you can suffer from fatigue, poor digestion, joint and muscle pain and weight issues.

 

 

The 80/20 Rule

 

If you truly want incredible energy and excellent health, follow the 80% alkaline and 20% acidic diet to maintain slightly alkaline blood.

 

 

The most common culprits for creating acidosis are poor diet, poor digestion, coffee, tea, soda, milk products (excluding butter) and stress.  Minerals are typically depleted in acidic foods while alkaline foods are most often rich in minerals.

 

Gradually increasing your alkalizing foods and drinks while decreasing acid forming products and stress, can certainly put you on the right path to improving your blood pH.

 

Most nutrition stores will have pH Test Strips that can be used as a tool to get a baseline. Dr. Baroody in his book, Alkalize or Die, does not recommend this as an absolute measure of whether the “overall” body is too alkaline or acidic, but it can be useful in monitoring your improvements as you become slightly alkaline, blood becomes healthier, and your energy skyrockets!

MSG – Dangers, Where It Is Hidden In Your Food and The Benefits of Avoiding It!

 

We all want our food to taste good, but not at the expense of damaging our health. Unfortunately, much of the food on the market today contains mono-sodium glutamate (MSG).  This flavor enhancer can be found in soups, processed meats, yogurt, bread, canned tuna, salad dressings…and the list goes on and on!

 

Artificial flavorings can do irreversible damage to the body, and it is more important than ever for each of us to learn how to avoid these so we can help ourselves and our families to maintain better health!

 

Mono-sodium glutamate (MSG) is a widely used flavor enhancer and originates naturally from seaweeds, sugar beets, and soybeans. It is ironic that such a chemical, which enhances flavors in other food, has no flavor of its own. It is synthetically produced into a white, crystalline powder and can be added in packaged products and culinary additives.

 

The Japanese were the first users of flavor enhancers. They were particularly fond of the seaweed until 1908, when Kikunae Ikeda recognized the potential of glutamic acid. Soon, mono-sodium glutamate was produced by fermenting the glutamic acid until the MSG is extracted.

 

Truthinlabeling.org has been very active in their quest to discourage people from using synthetic flavoring in cooking and preparing food. Their website is very informative as to why it would be beneficial to abandon the use of mono-sodium glutamate altogether. If you do, you lower your chances of suffering the health effects attributed to MSG.

 

The health hazards attributed to this substance, especially to those who are allergic, are quite serious.  Chest pain, facial pressure, burning sensations, heart palpitations, numbness, sweating, headache, and other health issues are known to be linked to consumption of MSG.  Those with asthma can be sensitive to glutamates and may experience such symptoms upon ingestion of food laced with the substance.  These symptoms are also compiled to be known as Chinese Restaurant Syndrome.  Other experiments and studies also show that high dosage of mono-sodium glutamate also contains life-threatening amino acid that is a neurotoxin.

 

The toxic possibility of mono-sodium glutamate was first recorded in 1968, where Dr. Robert Ho Man Kwok suffered numbness, tightness in the chest, and tingling after eating in Chinese restaurants. By then, Chinese restaurants were premier users of MSG. The term Chinese restaurant syndrome is used to describe chest pain, facial pressure, burning sensations, heart palpitations, numbness, sweating, headache, and other health issues are known to be linked to consumption of MSG.

 

In 1969, Dr. John Olney had determined that MSG produced neuroendocrine disorders and brain lesions in mice that were fed and exposed to mono-sodium glutamate.  Many studies since then have termed MSG as a neurotoxin and an excitotoxin.

Even though a product is labeled “No MSG”, it is not reliable enough when the product contains any of the numerous equivalents. If you make the healthy choice to avoid foods with MSG, you should familiarize yourself with the terms in the chart. They are all, more or less, derivatives and other terms of MSG used to hide the presence of mono-sodium glutamate in products.  Manufacturing companies seem to be continuously using other terms or adding a similar chemical.

Flavors in food can be enhanced naturally by adding herbs, spices, lemon juice, nuts and seeds.  This way, you get to experience the real flavors and benefits of the healthy nutritional food. There is really no need for food additives that may prove to be poison in the future. When you avoid these additives and start enjoying your food prepared in a more natural way, you, most likely, will see a tremendous improvement in your health.
